Treating Anorexia Nervosa Using All The Tools We Have

We all know there are many ways to skin a cat, and perhaps the best way is to use all the tools at one’s disposal.  At Kartini Clinic we use our meal plan, weight restoration, medical supervision, as well as the power of milieu, family therapy, and art therapy.  But there is one tool in our toolbox that I haven’t talked about much on this blog, and it is the work done by Bart Walsh, LCSW, our hypnotherapist and individual therapist.

Bart, unlike all the other therapists and doctors at Kartini Clinic, works with the unconscious.  Not in the sense of looking for a “reason” for anorexia nervosa, but in the sense that most of what goes on in our head ? thought, if you will ? is unconscious.  Unconscious and powerful.  Bart uses hypnotherapy and other techniques to tap into the unconscious experience of our patients to help them to find healing while they are being weight restored.

Sound interesting?

Bart is offering a series of four workshops for therapists, over a series of Saturdays from 9AM to 5:15 PM.  The first workshop on March 12th covered Effective Anxiety and Depression Treatment in the Eating Disordered Using Essential Neurobiological Communication.  Here is what one participant said about that session:

“Kudos to Bart for a fantastic and very engaging workshop yesterday. My head felt like it was exploding with new information, insights, and treatment strategies by the end of the day. Thanks so much, Bart, for your efforts in preparing and delivering a top-notch presentation, and thanks to Kartini Clinic for sponsoring this. Bart is a unique resource in our community and more people should know about what he is doing.”

The next workshop will be on April 23rd: How Hypnosis can be Employed to Establish a Realistic Body Image in the Eating Disordered.

On May 21st: Utilization Sobriety: Incorporating Essential Neurobiological Communication for Brief Individualized Substance Abuse Treatment.

And finally, on June 18th:  Eating with your Genes off?  Rapid eating Disorder remission and its Implications for Behavioral Epigenetics.

6.25 CEUs per course are available for therapists — but you do not have to be a therapist to attend.  For more information please contact Sheila Scrobogna or call her at 503 249 8851.
