Our Mission
Kartini Clinic was established in June of 1998, with the explicit mission to serve children, adolescents and young adults of the Pacific Northwest who suffer from eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or food phobia, as well as those whose disordered eating contributes to obesity or wasting conditions. Today we serve children and young adults from all over the country, including Alaska, Hawaii and overseas. Please visit our Staff page for an introduction to our staff and their credentials.

Our Treatment Philosophy
At Kartini Clinic we take a family-based approach to the eating disorders of children and young adults, similar to the Maudsley Method. A significant difference, however, lies in our emphasis on a medical as opposed to psychiatric approach to treatment. Kartini Clinic is owned and run by pediatricians, not psychiatrists, and consequently has a strong emphasis on prompt, adequate weight restoration as a prerequisite to normal growth and development. We work closely with other pediatric sub-specialists to provide up-to-date care for these conditions, and require our patients to have a primary care doctor with whom we will work closely to assure continuity of care.
Eating disorders are complex diseases. New research in neurobiology and genetics strongly suggests that anorexia and bulimia are inherited conditions steered by powerful but poorly understood brain chemistry. Understanding the medical nature of eating disorders helps patients and their families to understand that parents do not cause this disease nor do children choose to have it. At the Kartini Clinic we work together as a multidisciplinary team of medical doctors, psychiatric nurse practitioners and psychotherapists to diagnose and control whatever environmental risk factors may precipitate or worsen an eating disorder; by using evidence-based medicine to achieve medical stabilization, combined with family, group, and individual therapy, as needed, we help our patients achieve lasting remission and personal healing.
